How to challenge limiting beliefs

Updated: Aug 12, 2020

What is a limiting belief?

Limiting beliefs are thoughts/feelings/associations with our identity and our abilities. Such beliefs often prevent us from making necessary changes in out lives which may increase our happiness.

These beliefs come in various forms, firstly negative self-beliefs based on insecurity and low confidence levels.

  • "I'm not smart/pretty/strong etc enough to do that"

These beliefs are dangerous as they prevent us from following our dreams and doing the things we love. Our perception of our self worth is crucial to making positive changes in life and increasing happiness.

Secondly, limits which society has imposed on us.

  • "No pain no gain"

This kind of limiting belief suggests, if we don't suffer, we shouldn't be rewarded. This is a dangerous belief as it often result in self-sabotage. people believe they are not allowed to have good things as they haven't worked hard enough or suffered enough to deserve it.

So, how do you challenge a limiting belief?

  • Research examples of limiting beliefs, this will help with recognising when they appear in your life

  • When you're faced with a self-deprecating scenario, recognise you are experiencing a self-limiting belief

  • Write it down if you can

  • Contemplate where the belief may have come from, for example maybe your father told you to be worthy you must have children

  • Remember these are not only not true but often they are not even your beliefs

  • Decide on your alternative, don't want to be an actor because people say it's too competitive, you decide what you believe and do what you want to do!

Recognition [What, Who/Where/When, Why]

Action [decide what is write for you]
