A SMART goal isn't just a clever goal... It's an actually and acronym. Used in counselling and coaching sessions, a professional will often help you set goals. There are a few various model for goal setting, SMART is my personal favourite.
It goes like this:
All good goals have some things in common
S pecific - Ensures you know the specific steps to take
M easureable - You will know when you have succeeded
A ttainable - Something you can actually do and is within your control
R ealistic - Within your capability/time frame/budget etc
T imed - Pushes you to actually do it and not procrastinate
This exercise [with hard work and dedication] may help you create a more clear, achievable and useful goal.
What do I want to achieve?
Firstly you want to establish what the goal is. Usually a coach can help you figure this out if you don't know yet.
What are my measures?
This is more complicated but you can describe what you will see, feel, hear. Where you will be, maybe what you will have when you have achieved the goal.
What is my time frame for achieving my goal?
Creates a sense of urgency, give yourself a realistic time frame. This may be a bit difficult to judge by yourself so you could try consulting someone else like a friend or family member to see what they think. Or you could work with a coach or counsellor to help you decide on a time.
How will I know I have achieved my goal?
This is related to your measures, decide exactly what point you will know you have achieved your goal. Maybe you will have earned your first 1k, or got promoted, or finished a project.
What will happen throughout the journey?
This is important for motivation as you may see a lot of changes in yourself and to your lifestyle as you start to work towards a goal. So if your goal is related to eating better, you may have clearer skin or more energy. You can also use this to plan for any bumps in the road [but this can be done separately] by saying I will be more busy, but I won't give up!
Why do I want to achieve this goal?
What will happen as a result of achieving the goal, this is one of the most important questions to ask yourself. Who is motivating you? Why did you start this in the first place? Ask yourself this question whenever you feel like giving up, I promise, it works! [There's another exercise I like to do in these cases which I will probably teach you at some point]
Finally, test your goal!
Is it SMART?
Is it Specific enough?
Measurable?
Attainable?
Realistic?
Timed?
If you've finished the questions and you are happy with them, this is when you can start taking action steps towards your goal! Get ready, you're going to change your life!
