You are NOT late!

Something they don't tell you about adulthood is how the whole 'comparing yourself to others' habit, never goes away.

I chose to go to university, which a lot of my friends didn't do. So, when I finally met up with a friend one day I realised how different our lives were.

In just under 3 years she:

  • got a full time job

  • got married

  • bought a house

  • got promoted [like twice]

  • had a baby

Whereas I:

  • lived in a dysfunctional, cheap, rented apartment

  • ate pot noodle every day

  • crammed in work, studying, coursework, lectures [and of course, socials]

I felt kind of unsuccessful. That's what my life is supposed to look like, right?

WRONG.

I found out a little later that I was doing what I enjoyed doing. I was looking at another person's story and seeing how it fit into society's idea of success. Wanting to be seen as successful was more important in my head than whether I was having fun.

Yes, I went to Uni later than everyone in my group, I didn't take much time to relax. I wasn't working full-time and I didn't have lots of income, I wasn't married or on the property ladder. That does not mean I am 'late' or 'behind' anyone else.

Your story is your story, the path you want to be on is where you are supposed to be and discovering that is one of the most crucial elements of happiness. If you continue to view your life as worth less than others because they fit into a mould that you don't, just remember

- that is not where you are supposed to be right now, and you may discover that it isn't where you ever will be, or even want to be.

Enjoy the ride <3
